Expense Tracking Software

Expense tracking software is a great way to help you budget and manage your finances. If you don’t have any sort of plan to track your income and spending, you won’t be able to set goals for yourself to achieve. If you don’t know how much money you’re spending, you could be throwing away money that you could otherwise easily save. Track your spending and use a budget to spend where you can and should, and to save money for your future and financial goals.

What is the purpose of expense tracking software? Most people have financial problems because they don’t know how to manage their money. They often feel like they are drowning in debt or can’t afford to support themselves when they are really just spending their money wrong. With a budget, you are telling yourself exactly how much money you can spend where. That will mean cutting out unnecessary expenses and spending some time keeping up with your finances, but that’s a part of being financially successful.

Expense tracking software makes budgeting a lot easier. You set it up initially and let it work for you. You don’t have to keep track with pen and paper and you don’t have to start from scratch.  A good software program will take you through step by step. You can set financial goals such as saving for a new car or saving for retirement. It will help you calculate how much you need to save each month to save enough by a certain date. The amount of money you need to save each month to put towards goals should be worked into your spending and budget plan. This will help you get there.

Quicken

Quicken is my favorite expense tracking software. There are several different versions of Quicken to suit any needs. It is a great software programs that helps you track your spending, create goals, and reach goals. They have programs for home and business, a deluxe edition, and property management. If you have trouble using pen and paper to tediously make plans, or you aren’t advanced enough to use spreadsheets to design your own budget, Quicken is the perfect alternative.

Fortunately for a beginner to budgeting, Quicken software is inexpensive and easy to follow. You can spend just a little time figuring out how to use it and set it up, then it’s all ready to use. If for some reason it doesn’t work well for you, you won’t have wasted a lot of money.

You don’t have to use software to budget effectively. As long as you are spending efficiently, saving for your goals, and staying out of debt, it doesn’t matter if you use software or a tattered notebook. The point is that you are working towards financial success.

Money Saving Tips

Spend Less on Food

There are several ways to save money on food. You may benefit from all ways or just one. Start by cutting back on eating out. If you do it often, that could be a lot of savings right there. Start by cutting eating out in half. For some it may seem extreme, but it’s really not that hard. If you eat out 4 times a week, eat out twice a week. If you eat out once a month, eat out every other month. Obviously, the more you eat out, the more you’ll save.

You can save money on your grocery bill as well. This is a helpful money saving tip for those who don’t eat out often. Use coupons and buy generic. Sometimes you’ll have coupons for the name brand. If you’re buying it on sale with a coupon and it’s cheaper than store brand, buy name brand. Don’t buy as much. If you find yourself throwing out a lot of spoiled food, stop buying so much. Also, if you have leftovers often and end up throwing the leftovers away, learn how to make smaller amounts so you don’t have any leftovers to throw away.

These money saving tips can do double duty for those who eat out a lot but love to cook. Eat out less and learn how to buy effectively to save the most.

Find Cheap or Free Entertainment

Entertainment is another big spending point for many individuals. Look for free entertainment as an alternative first and foremost. Instead of going out to a movie, check cable to see what’s on. Go to museums, parks, festivals, and other cheap or free entertainment. Stay in from time to time. Play games at home. Invite friends over for dinner. You don’t have to spend lots of money, or any money at all, to enjoy yourself.

Save Trips, Save Gas

Saving on gas can be a big help, especially when gas prices are high. Carpool if you live near coworkers. That can cut your gas expense nearly in half. More if you live by more than one coworker. Condense trips or stay home. Learn how to drive to save on gas. Speeding up fast and slamming on your breaks wastes gas. A lot of the tips that help you save on gas also make you a safer driver on the road.

Cut Out TV

To some people, this is an extreme. No TV? If you find that you rarely watch TV, there’s no reason to have it. Most of the current series on television are also available for free online. Use Hulu.com to watch all sorts of shows. Get a netflix subscription for $9 a month as opposed to $100 or more a month for cable and watch just what you want. Better yet, stop watching TV and find out how much free time you have to do things you’ve always wanted to do. You’d be surprised at how much time you waste watching TV.

This goes along with cutting out TV. Reading more is not only cheap entertainment, free if you use the library, but you can learn something, too. Educate yourself and you just might find a new hobby you never thought you could love.
