Ways to Save Money

Whether you’ve lost your job, are saving for a house, or just feel like your money disappears before you know it, finding ways to save money isn’t always easy. However, if you take just a few simple steps, you can make saving money easier. It’s more than just making your own coffee. There are big steps you can take that will make a big different in many financial areas of your life.

Set Up a Budget

Setting up a budget is one of the best ways to save money, even though it is indirect. By organizing your finances, you can see where you’re spending. After all, saving money is all about how you spend. Spend a month or so writing down everything you spend money on from a cup of coffee to your mortgage. This will help you see what you are buying from day to day. Don’t skip any expenses. Include credit card payments as well, at least the minimum.

Add up your income and your expenses. For most people, income is just your regular paycheck. If you have other sources such as interest or dividends, include those, too. Subtract the total expenses from the income. If you get a negative number, you’re going into debt. If it’s positive, you must have extra money to save. If you get zero, you’re breaking even. Whether you are trying to pay off debt or save money for your future, you need to work to make it a large positive number. The bigger, the better.

Cut Out Expenses you don’t Care About

Right off the bat, cut out expenses that you don’t care about. Some of these things could be expenses you didn’t realize your were paying for. This can happen easily with services and subscription. For example, maybe your cable package includes channels that you never watch. Another possibility is that your buying lunch at work everyday because you forgot to make it the night before. Spend that 5 to 10 minutes each not and you can save $20 or more each week.

Cut Back on Expenses you don’t Need

There are some expenses that you don’t need, they are wants. For example, you go out to eat because you enjoy it or you buy video games because you like to play them. You don’t have to cut these expenses out, just cut back. Instead of eating out 3 or 4 times a week, make it once a week. Instead of buying video games, rent them or swap them for new ones. If you have a lot of debt to pay off, you should seriously consider cutting out these expenses until the debt is paid down.

Think Before you Spend

The general rule for saving money is to think before you spend. Why are you spending money? Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s a good buy. You’d save even more money by not buying the item at all. If you’re on the fence about an expense, just say no.
